About

In 1981, two brothers and a sister from Estonia hand built this four-storey building on South Main, on the quiet side of Penticton, a few minutes from Skaha Lake. While the concrete was still new they planted sugar maples along the front. Those trees have outlasted every name the address has worn over the years.

One of the brothers was Ivo Jaager. He stayed in Penticton and for years his name was on the tenancy agreements — the person you called if the heat failed or a key went missing. He also belonged to this town in the ordinary way that lasts: the Royal Canadian Legion, including a term as president of the Penticton branch. Ivo passed in 2023 and the maples carry his legacy on.

The building has carried various names, Belle Villa, among others. Recently we brought its name back to the trees. Sugar Maple Place is twenty homes — one and two bedroom spacious apartments, laundry in the suite, ensuited master bedrooms and run from here, for people who actually live here.

South Main is not a postcard. It is the street people use. Transit close by, a bike lane out front and two lakes minutes away. The trees turn in October, bringing seasons to the front door.
